Braided Styles That Survive the Maryland Summer

Maryland summers are no joke. The humidity, the heat, the sweat, and the sudden afternoon rainstorms all conspire against your hair. If you are planning a protective style for the season, choosing the right one makes the difference between a style that lasts six weeks and one that falls apart in two.

At Aminata Hair Designs in Laurel, MD, we have been styling clients through DMV summers for years. Here are the braided styles that actually hold up in the heat and humidity.

What Makes a Good Summer Style

A great summer protective style checks several boxes. It handles humidity without frizzing out immediately. It dries quickly after sweating or getting caught in the rain. It does not trap excessive heat against your scalp. It looks good whether your day involves the office, the pool, or a cookout. And it lasts long enough to carry you through the hottest weeks without needing to redo it every two to three weeks.

The Best Summer Styles We Recommend

Knotless braids in medium or large size. Medium knotless braids are the most popular summer style at our salon for good reason. They are lightweight enough to stay comfortable in the heat, they last six to eight weeks which covers the core of summer, and they handle humidity better than smaller braids that tend to frizz at the root faster. Large knotless braids are even lighter and cooler.

Cornrows and stitch braids. Cornrows are the ultimate summer style. They lay flat against your scalp so there is minimal heat trapped. They dry incredibly fast after sweating or swimming. They look polished and clean without any bulk. Stitch braids give you the cornrow coolness with a more elevated, detailed look. If you work outdoors or exercise daily, cornrows are unbeatable.

Faux locs in shoulder to mid-back length. Faux locs hold up well in humidity because the texture is intentionally distressed. A little frizz actually makes them look better. Shoulder-length faux locs keep you cooler than waist-length ones. Butterfly locs and goddess locs are especially forgiving in the summer because their bohemian texture absorbs environmental changes gracefully.

Crochet braids in curly or wavy texture. Curly crochet braids are a hidden gem for summer. They install in two to three hours, look naturally beachy and effortless, and handle humidity beautifully because the curly texture hides frizz. Wet and wavy crochet styles look even better with a little moisture in the air.

Senegalese twists in medium size. Twists are lighter than braids of the same size and they breathe more easily. Medium Senegalese twists balance style and summer practicality well. They dry faster than box braids and look polished in the heat.

Summer Styles to Be Cautious About

Very small knotless or box braids. While they last the longest, small braids take forever to dry after sweating and can develop mildew or odor if not properly cared for in the humidity. If you choose small braids, commit to thorough washing and drying routines.

Silk press. A silk press in a Maryland summer is a gamble. High humidity and sweat will revert your press much faster than winter. If you have a specific event, it can work for a few days. But as a daily summer style, it is not practical for most people.

Very long waist-length styles. The longer your braids or locs, the more heat they trap against your back and neck. If you are spending a lot of time outdoors, consider mid-back or shorter for comfort.

Summer Aftercare Tips

Wash more frequently in summer. Every two weeks at minimum. Sweat buildup is heavier in hot weather and leaving it on your scalp leads to irritation and odor. Use a light spritz of water and essential oil to refresh your scalp between washes. Sleep with a satin bonnet even when it is hot. Use a lighter, thinner bonnet designed for warm weather if your regular one feels too heavy. After swimming, rinse your braids immediately with fresh water. Chlorine and saltwater both damage braids and dry out your scalp. Avoid heavy oils in summer. They mix with sweat and create buildup much faster than in cooler months.

Plan Your Summer Hair Calendar

A smart approach to summer hair is to plan your installs around the season. Get a fresh install in late May or early June to start the summer strong. That set will carry you through early to mid July. Take a short break for your hair, deep condition, and install a second summer set in late July that carries you through August. By September the humidity drops and you can transition to a fall style.
