But they are different in important ways, and choosing the right one for your hair, lifestyle, and budget will make a real difference in how much you love your braids.
How Box Braids Work
Box braids are the traditional braiding style most people grew up seeing. The braider starts with a small knot of extension hair anchored to your natural hair at the root, then braids down from there. The knot creates the foundation of the braid.
Box braids have a long and well-known history. They are generally faster to install, can be made very small for a long-lasting style, and hold their shape well over the weeks. The trade-off is more tension at the root, a visible knot at the scalp, potential edge damage if installed too tight, and heavier weight than knotless braids.
How Knotless Braids Work
Knotless braids use a feed-in technique. The braider starts with just your natural hair and gradually adds extension hair as the braid grows. There is no knot at the root.
Knotless braids create no tension at the root, look more natural, feel lighter and more comfortable, are easier on edges, and style beautifully because no knot shows when you pull them up. The trade-off is a longer install time and a slightly higher cost.

Get box braids if you are on a tighter budget, if you want a faster install, if you want very small braids that last a long time, or if you love the classic look.
For most of our clients, we recommend knotless braids, especially when hair health is a priority. But box braids still have their place, and we install both at our Laurel, MD salon.

Aftercare Is the Same for Both
Whichever style you pick, the care routine is similar. Wear a satin bonnet or silk pillowcase every night. Spritz lightly with water and oil two to three times a week. Wash with diluted shampoo every two to three weeks. Avoid tight ponytails for the first week. Do not keep them in past eight weeks.
