How to Make Your Locs Grow Faster: Tips from a Professional Loctician Near You

The Truth About Growing Your Locs Faster

Every loc wearer eventually asks the same question: how do I make my locs grow faster? As a professional loctician serving clients across Laurel, MD and the DMV, we hear it almost every week at Aminata Hair Designs.

The honest truth is that hair grows at roughly the same rate for most people, about half an inch per month. The real question is not how to grow faster. It is how to keep all the length you grow and create the conditions for the healthiest possible growth.

Growth at the Root vs. Length Retention at the Ends

Loc length depends on two things. Growth at the root is how fast and healthy your new hair comes in. Length retention at the ends is how much of that growth you actually keep.

Most clients who feel their locs are not growing actually are growing hair. They are losing length at the ends due to breakage, dryness, or improper maintenance. Fix that, and your locs will appear to grow much faster.

Start With Your Scalp

Your scalp is the soil. If it is not healthy, nothing will grow well. Wash regularly with a residue-free clarifying shampoo every one to two weeks. Avoid heavy product buildup by skipping thick waxes and butters that clog follicles. Massage your scalp for a few minutes daily to increase blood flow and stimulate growth. Stay hydrated and eat foods rich in protein, iron, vitamins A and E, biotin, and omega-3s.

Stop Over-Retwisting

This is one of the most common growth killers we see. Clients who retwist their locs every two weeks are unintentionally thinning their roots and weakening their hair. Aim for retwists every four to six weeks and let your roots breathe in between. Locs grow stronger when they are not constantly being manipulated.

Protect Your Ends

The ends of your locs are the oldest and most fragile parts. Seal them with a light natural oil after each wash. Avoid heavy styling that creates tension at the ends. Do not pull or stretch your locs to speed up growth. Keep them styled protectively during workouts and outdoor activities.

Sleep Like Your Hair Depends on It

Cotton pillowcases pull moisture from your locs and cause friction breakage. Switch to a satin or silk bonnet every night, use a silk pillowcase as backup, and keep a loose loc style or tie to prevent tangling while you sleep. This single change adds noticeable length retention over a year.

Get the Moisture Balance Right

Dry locs break. Over-moisturized locs become weak and mushy. The balance is everything. Spritz with a water and rose water mix two to three times a week. Seal with a light natural oil like jojoba, grapeseed, or rosemary oil. Avoid daily heavy moisturizers because they cause buildup rather than growth. Deep condition every four to six weeks.

Avoid Constant Tension Hairstyles

Locs that are constantly pulled into tight ponytails, buns, or styles that stress the hairline will suffer. Your edges and crown will thin out, and you will lose length where it matters most. Rotate your styles, wear your locs down sometimes, and do not always pull them back in the same direction.

What About Hair Growth Products

Hair vitamins, oils, and growth serums can support but never replace good fundamentals. If you are already eating well, sleeping enough, washing regularly, and getting proper retwists, growth products can be a helpful extra boost. But if you are skipping the basics, no oil will fix it.
