The Right Way to Wash Your Locs

One of the biggest myths in the loc community is that locs should not be washed often. The truth is exactly the opposite. A healthy loc journey requires a clean, well-washed scalp, and the right washing method matters just as much as the frequency. At Aminata Hair Designs in Laurel, MD, we have taught hundreds of clients how to wash their locs properly between appointments.

Why Washing Your Locs Matters

A clean scalp grows healthy hair. Locs that are rarely washed accumulate product buildup that weakens the loc, sweat and dirt that cause odor, oils that block the follicle, and dead skin cells that cause itching and dandruff.

Many clients believe locs lock better when they are not washed. That is a myth. Properly washed locs lock the same as dirty ones but stay much healthier throughout the journey.

How Often to Wash

Starter and new locs under six months should be washed every two weeks. Mature locs over six months should be washed every one to two weeks. If you have an active lifestyle or go to the gym regularly, wash weekly. During hot summer months wash more often. During cold winter months you can go a bit longer, but never exceed three weeks between washes.

If you can smell your scalp and it does not smell fresh, it is time to wash.

Step-by-Step Loc Washing Process

Step 1: Prep the shampoo. Pour shampoo into an applicator bottle and dilute it with water at about a one to one or one to two ratio. Undiluted shampoo can get trapped inside the loc and cause buildup or even mildew. Dilution prevents this.

Step 2: Section your locs. If you have a lot of locs, gather them into four sections with hair ties. This makes washing easier and more thorough.

Step 3: Apply shampoo to the scalp. In the shower, apply the diluted shampoo directly to your scalp section by section. Do not apply shampoo to the locs themselves. Let it run down naturally as you rinse.

Step 4: Massage gently. Use your fingertips and never your nails to massage the scalp in small circular motions. This lifts dirt and buildup, stimulates blood flow for growth, and loosens any tight spots from your last retwist. Spend three to five minutes massaging.

Step 5: Rinse thoroughly. This is where most people fail. Rinse, rinse, rinse, then rinse again. Loc texture traps shampoo inside and any residue left behind will cause buildup later. Run water through your locs for at least two to three minutes. Squeeze each loc gently to release water. Use cool water for the final rinse to seal the cuticle.

Step 6: Optional apple cider vinegar rinse. For a deep clarifying wash once a month, mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with two cups of water. Pour over scalp and locs, let sit two to five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This strips buildup, balances scalp pH, and reduces itch.

Step 7: Squeeze out excess water. Do not twist or wring your locs. Gently squeeze each loc with a towel and pat the scalp dry without rubbing vigorously.

Step 8: Dry them completely. This step is non-negotiable. Locs left wet develop mildew, a problem that is incredibly hard to fix once it starts. Air dry in front of a fan for four to six hours, sit under a hooded dryer at low heat for thirty to forty-five minutes, or blow dry at low heat pointing the air down the locs. You can combine methods to speed things up. Do not sleep with damp locs under any circumstances.

Step 9: Add light oil and protect. Once fully dry, apply a light scalp oil like jojoba, grapeseed, or a rosemary mix. Wrap your hair in a silk scarf or satin bonnet for sleep.

What Shampoo to Use

The most important rule is residue-free. Avoid shampoos with heavy moisturizing creams, thick conditioners, silicones, mineral oil, or two-in-one formulas. Look for shampoos labeled residue-free or clarifying. If you are unsure what to use, ask us at your next appointment.

Signs Your Locs Need to Be Washed More Often

Persistent itchy scalp, visible buildup at the roots, unpleasant smell, dandruff or flaking, and locs feeling weighed down or greasy are all signs you need to increase your wash frequency.
