How to Show Up Ready for the Best Appointment of Your Life

The night before your appointment at Aminata Hair Designs in Laurel, MD, what should you do with your hair? It is one of the most asked questions we get from new clients. Proper preparation makes a huge difference in the comfort of your appointment, the quality of the result, and how long your style lasts.

Why Preparation Matters

When your hair is clean, detangled, and ready to be styled, you get a faster install with less time fighting tangles, cleaner parts and lines in braids, less breakage during sectioning, a more comfortable scalp throughout the appointment, and a longer-lasting final style. It also helps us focus on creating a beautiful style instead of spending hours on detangling.

The Night Before: Wash and Condition

For braids, twists, and most installs, shampoo with a clarifying shampoo to remove all product buildup. Deep condition with heat for thirty minutes. Detangle thoroughly in sections while conditioner is in your hair. Rinse with cool water to close the cuticle. Air dry as much as possible.

For loc maintenance, generally do not wash the night before because we will wash during your appointment. Do not apply heavy products that we will need to remove.

If you are unsure about your specific service, contact us or send a message at (301) 204-5847.

The Night Before: Detangle Thoroughly

This step alone can save hours at your appointment. Apply a slippery conditioner or detangling spray. Section hair into four to six parts. Start at the ends with a wide-tooth comb. Work your way up to the roots. Use your fingers first, then a comb. Do not rush because patience prevents breakage.

If your hair is severely tangled, plan an extra hour or contact us about a wash and detangle add-on service.

The Night Before: Stretch Your Hair

Slightly stretched hair is easier and faster to braid. After washing and conditioning, you can air dry in twists or braids so your hair stretches without heat, blow dry on cool or low heat with a comb attachment, use African threading for a heat-free stretch, or use banding with hair ties at intervals down a section.

Avoid stretching with high heat the night before because excessive heat right before braids can dehydrate the hair.

The Morning Of: Eat a Real Meal

This is more important than people realize. Braiding appointments can last six to twelve hours. You need a real breakfast before coming, snacks for during the appointment, and water throughout. Come well-fed and well-hydrated.

The Morning Of: Dress Comfortably

Wear a button-up or zip-up top so you do not have to pull anything over your head when leaving. Choose loose, comfortable clothes for the long sit. Bring layers because our salon can feel cool over a long appointment. Wear minimal jewelry that will not get tangled.

The Morning Of: Skip Heavy Products

The morning of your appointment, your hair should be clean but not freshly washed, fully detangled, free of heavy oils gels or creams, and free of edge control because we will apply it at the end. Excess product makes strands slippery and harder to braid.

What to Bring

Bring snacks and water, a phone charger or laptop charger, headphones, a satin bonnet for when you leave, the hair extensions if you are providing your own, and reference photos if you have a specific style in mind.

What Not to Do Before Your Appointment

Do not apply edge control because it makes the hairline slippery. Do not oil your scalp heavily for the same reason. Do not come with wet hair because braiding wet hair is uncomfortable and the style will not set right. Do not come with tangled unwashed hair because your appointment will take significantly longer. And do not skip the consultation even if it is a quick chat because talking through your goals helps us deliver exactly what you want.

Special Prep for Specific Services

For knotless braids and box braids, wash, condition, detangle, and stretch. Bring your hair extensions and plan for a long appointment. For loc maintenance, come with dry hair because we wash during the appointment. Avoid heavy products and mention any scalp issues during your consultation. For wig installs, wash and braid down your natural hair the day before or ask about our wash add-on. Bring your wig and any specific styling products you prefer. For silk press, do not wash the day before and avoid heavy products. Detangle gently.
